Chimamanda Adichie Accuses Euracare Hospital of Stalling Inquest Into Son’s Death

Renowned author Chimamanda Adichie has publicly accused Euracare Hospital of frustrating efforts to investigate the death of her son, Nkanu Nnamdi, after a court stalled the scheduled inquest.

Frustration of the Legal Process

In a detailed, publicly released letter, Adichie described the ongoing legal process as deeply painful, stating that the situation has denied her the peace required to mourn her child properly. The author explained that she chose to publish the letter because she believed remaining silent would allow wrongdoing to continue unchecked. However, she emphasized that her intention was not to incite personal attacks against anyone mentioned in her correspondence.

According to Adichie, Euracare Hospital initially supported the legal inquiry, applying for an inquest in January after citing “rumours of negligence.” However, she alleges that the hospital shifted its stance, subsequently stalling and delaying the process once concerns regarding negligence were raised. Adichie argued that this sudden shift raises serious concerns regarding transparency and accountability.

Key Statements from Adichie’s Letter

In her correspondence, Adichie shared several deeply personal reflections on her grief and the legal hurdles she is facing:

  • On Her Grief: “I wake up every single morning with my heart racing. Did this really happen? My precious son, Nkanu Nnamdi. My Kankan, my diokpala.”
  • On the Loneliness of Loss: “The ultimate and utter loneliness of grief is that only you can know the true depth of your despair.”
  • On the Impact of the Delays: “I long for, at least, peace to mourn, but Euracare Hospital has robbed me even of that.”
  • On Breaking Her Silence: “I have decided to make this letter public because to keep silent about Euracare’s evil is to enable it. I do not want anyone mentioned to be personally targeted.”
  • On the Hospital’s Actions: “It was Euracare which first applied for an inquest in January, stating that our son’s death was unexpected and an inquest was in their interest because of ‘rumours of negligence.’ Yet they have stalled and muddied and obfuscated.”
  • On the Nature of an Inquest: “An inquest is a public judicial inquiry designed to establish the circumstances surrounding a de.ath. It is not a trial. It is not a claim for damages. It is simply a search for the truth.”

The sudden stalling of the inquest has drawn significant public attention as the legal struggle for answers continues.
