Breaking Barriers: Filmhouse Group Leads Gender Diversity in Nollywood Leadership

In an industry long dominated by men, Nigeria’s Filmhouse Group is rewriting the script—both on and off the screen. With women holding 50% of leadership positions, the company is proving that gender diversity is not just a moral imperative but a strategic advantage driving growth and innovation.

In an exclusive interview with Business Day, ten women at the helm of Nigeria’s leading cinema, distribution, and production company share how their leadership is transforming Nollywood. From spearheading audience-focused campaigns to championing inclusive workplace policies, these trailblazers are laying the foundation for a more equitable and dynamic film industry.

Since its inception in 2012, Filmhouse has expanded from a single-screen cinema to 55 screens across 11 locations, making it West Africa’s largest cinema chain. But beyond its operational success, its female leaders are redefining the industry—shaping marketing strategies, amplifying diverse stories, and nurturing new talent.

Chief Content Officer Ladun Awobokun is leading the charge by securing female-led narratives and culturally significant stories, while Chief Marketing Officer Mojisola Oladapo has redefined audience engagement through innovative campaigns and strategic partnerships. Alongside them, Barbara Babarinsa, Eguono Ohwo, Chizoba Obi, Toluwanimi Adeyemi, Edith Itoya, Victoria Ogar, Winifred Amakulor, and Victoria Ushebi are driving excellence across production, business management, finance, distribution, and public relations.

Filmhouse Group’s commitment to gender parity is more than symbolic—it is a testament to the power of inclusive leadership. As Nollywood continues to gain global recognition, the company is setting a precedent for the future—one where women are not just present but leading the way in shaping the industry’s direction.
