Vice President Applauds Ghana Medical Trust Fund Health Initiative

Vice President Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang earlierq today undertook a working visit to the Ghana Medical Trust Fund, a key government intervention designed to strengthen universal healthcare delivery and ease the burden of non-communicable diseases not fully covered under the National Health Insurance Scheme.

She was received by the Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh and the Fund’s Administrator, Obuobia Darko-Opoku, who briefed her on the programme’s progress and strategic direction.

The MahamaCares initiative, established to bridge critical gaps identified during the development of the government’s manifesto, complements broader healthcare reforms, including the uncapping of NHIS and the rollout of free primary healthcare to enhance preventive and early-stage treatment.

The Vice President was informed that extensive needs assessments conducted across health facilities have revealed significant gaps in specialised equipment, infrastructure, and human resource capacity. In response, the programme is being implemented in phases, beginning with cancer care, supported by trained facilitators, partnerships with selected private facilities, and the integration of digital systems across major hospitals.

She commended the team for their dedication and urged the documentation and sharing of impact stories to strengthen public trust and awareness. Emphasising the need for a layered healthcare system, she noted that Ghana’s approach must integrate prevention, early intervention, and specialised treatment, while prioritising training, research, and technical expertise, including the development of personnel capable of maintaining critical medical equipment.
