Trump Floats Seizing Iran Oil Hub as Tensions Escalate and Markets React

Donald Trump has suggested the United States could “take the oil in Iran,” raising the possibility of seizing the country’s critical fuel hub at Kharg Island, as tensions in the region intensify and global markets respond with alarm.

His remarks come as US officials say troops are preparing for possible ground operations, though Trump indicated a diplomatic resolution may still be within reach, adding that a peace deal could be achieved “fairly quickly.”

The strategic importance of Kharg Island has long made it a focal point in any potential conflict involving Iran. The island serves as a vital export terminal for much of the country’s oil, making it a key economic lifeline. Trump’s latest comments echo earlier statements he made about the island in 1988, underscoring its enduring geopolitical significance.

Overnight, the US president said American forces struck “many long sought-after targets” in Iran on Sunday, signaling a sharp escalation in military activity. At the same time, Israel confirmed it is carrying out new attacks on Tehran, further heightening fears of a broader regional conflict.

Iranian officials have responded with defiance. Earlier, the country’s parliament speaker warned that Iranian forces were “waiting” for American ground troops so they could “rain fire upon them,” suggesting preparations for a potentially prolonged and violent confrontation.

The rising tensions are already reverberating through global markets. Oil prices have surged to $115 per barrel amid concerns over supply disruptions, particularly given Kharg Island’s central role in exports. Analysts warn the energy shock could have cascading effects, including higher food prices, as fertiliser becomes more difficult to export.

With military posturing intensifying on multiple fronts and economic pressures mounting worldwide, the situation remains volatile, with both the threat of escalation and the possibility of rapid negotiations hanging in the balance.
