The Chairperson of the Board of Directors of Universities of South Africa, Professor Francis Peterson, has described as deeply unfortunate, the shooting to death of a student during the violent Walter Sisulu University’s students protests.

It would be recalled a student was shot and killed during the protest recently.

The Board expressed deep concern over the student protests, with Professor Peterson calling for calm and proper engagement between students and university management.

He said: “We acknowledge that the protest stemmed from concerns about living conditions, and we commend the university council for acting swiftly in launching an inquiry.”

He encouraged students to seek peaceful ways of resolving disputes, “While we await the outcome, we urge aggrieved students to follow proper channels in engagement. Peaceful dialogue ensures that voices are heard and their safety is protected.”

The deadly protest has sparked renewed calls for universities to strengthen student engagement and improve communication regarding grievances, especially where student welfare and campus safety are concerned.
