In a bid to address the inefficiencies plaguing Ghana’s power distribution system, President John Dramani Mahama has revealed plans to potentially privatize the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG). This move aims to tackle longstanding challenges, including operational inefficiencies, financial mismanagement, and inadequate service delivery.

During a meeting with a World Bank delegation on January 8, 2025, Mahama emphasized the importance of efficient energy distribution in achieving Ghana’s development goals. He noted that privatization may form part of a broader strategy to modernize and enhance the performance of the energy sector.

The President assured stakeholders that decisions regarding ECG’s future would involve thorough consultations to balance public interest with the need for improved performance. Mahama also highlighted the need to ensure a sustainable energy sector capable of meeting the growing demands of Ghana’s economy.

Involving the private sector in managing ECG could bring in much-needed efficiency and expertise, helping to resolve the company’s operational inefficiencies, financial mismanagement, and poor service delivery. Mahama’s proposal has sparked interest, with many seeing it as a potential solution to Ghana’s energy woes.

The Minister-Designate for Energy, John Jinapor, has also emphasized the urgency of addressing these issues, stating that he plans to work on a transparent framework for the proposed reforms even before his formal swearing-in.
