Ghana Flood Mitigation Team Finds Unauthorised Construction Contributing to Flooding

As part of Ghana’s ongoing post-flood mitigation measures, the country’s Flood Mitigation Task Force has inspected areas in Oyarifa, a suburb of Accra where developments have affected natural water channels and drainage patterns.

At one location, the team observed that a developer had constructed apartments over a water channel, while other nearby developments had altered the natural flow of water uphill.

Several inappropriately sited structures have been identified and marked for demolition to restore proper drainage pathways.

In the New York area of Oyarifa, the Task Force also encountered a retention wall being constructed to divert the natural flow of water.

The alteration contributed to flooding in areas that were previously not affected, highlighting the impact of unauthorised interventions on the environment and surrounding communities.

The assessment forms part of government’s efforts to address factors contributing to flooding and improve flood resilience across affected areas.
