Sir Keir Starmer has resigned as Prime Minister of Britain, weeks after insisting that he won’t resign.

He announced his resignation outside 10 Downing Street on Monday morning, June 22, 2026.

Starmer said every decision he has made in office has been about “putting the country I love first.”

He thanked his “fantastic wife, Vic”, describing her as a “rock”.

According to him, he wants to be the “best dad I can to my beautiful children, who are my pride and joy”.

He added that after leaving the “biggest job in the country” he will spend more time on “the most important job”, saying

“Being the best husband I can, to my fantastic wife Vic, who has been a rock by my side through good times and bad.”

He said “And being the best dad that I can to be beautiful children, who are my pride and joy.”

Earlier refusal

Starmer had earlier refused to resign following calls from Labour Party members.

In May this year, he took a defiant stance against growing calls to resign, telling his cabinet that he intends to keep on leading.

He said at the time that “The country expects us to get on with governing. That is what I am doing and what we must do as a cabinet.”

Starmer admitted that the past 48 hours had been “destabilizing” for the government and “that has a real economic cost for our country and for families.”

In what appeared to be fighting words, Starmer pointed out that “the Labour Party has a process for challenging a leader and that has not been triggered.”
