Food Aid Flight Bound for Flood-Hit Communities Crashes in South Sudan, Leaving Three Crew Members Dead

A humanitarian cargo flight delivering emergency food assistance to remote communities in South Sudan crashed on Tuesday morning in Unity State, killing all three crew members on board, according to officials from Samaritan’s Purse, the international relief organization that chartered the mission.

The aircraft, operated by local carrier Nari Air, had departed from the capital, Juba, transporting approximately two tonnes of food supplies intended for families displaced by severe flooding across the region. Bikram Rai, deputy country director for Samaritan’s Purse in South Sudan, confirmed the fatalities and expressed condolences to the families of the crew.

“Our response team has now reached the site of the incident, and it is with deep sorrow that we confirm the loss of all three crew members,” Rai said. He added that the supplies were part of ongoing relief operations aimed at supporting communities cut off by rising waters and deteriorating road access.

The crash occurred at roughly 8 a.m. (0600 GMT), about 20 kilometres from the Leer Airstrip in Leer County, an oil-producing area near the Sudan border. Local authorities are expected to assist in securing the site while investigations begin.

Nari Air has not yet issued a statement regarding the incident, and further information about the type of aircraft involved has not been released. According to the company’s website, Nari Air provides a range of aviation services in South Sudan, including passenger transport and cargo charters frequently used for humanitarian missions.

South Sudan continues to face recurring floods that have displaced hundreds of thousands of people in recent years, intensifying dependence on air-delivered humanitarian aid. Officials say an investigation will determine the cause of the crash and evaluate any operational or safety concerns.
