A young Nigerian man from Adamawa State, Usama Abdullahi, has voiced his disappointment after discovering that the three girlfriends he shared stolen food items with failed to visit him during his time in custody.
Abdullahi, 24, formerly employed at a local car wash, was initially sentenced to two years in prison for stealing packs of instant noodles in Shelleng Local Government Area. According to officials, he fled to Shani after the incident but was later apprehended and brought back to face charges.
His case came up for review during a routine visit by the Adamawa State Jail Delivery Committee—an initiative aimed at reducing overcrowding in correctional facilities across the state. The committee, led by the Chief Judge of Adamawa State, Hon. Justice Hafsat Abdulrahman, visited the Shelleng Satellite Custodial Centre on Wednesday, November 19, 2025.
After assessing his case, Justice Abdulrahman revised Abdullahi’s sentence from two years’ imprisonment to community service, citing the need for proportional punishment and rehabilitation opportunities for minor offenders.
When questioned by the committee, Abdullahi explained that he had stolen several cartons of noodles and distributed them among his three girlfriends before fleeing the area. He expressed regret not only for the crime but also for the fact that none of the beneficiaries visited him during his detention.
Feeling betrayed, Abdullahi stated that he plans to end the relationships upon completing his community service, emphasizing that the experience has taught him a difficult personal lesson.
The case has drawn attention to ongoing efforts in Adamawa State to reform sentencing practices, promote restorative justice, and decongest correctional facilities through periodic reviews.
