African Union Says Tanzania’s General Elections Failed to Meet Credible Democratic Standards

The African Union Election Observation Mission has concluded that Tanzania’s recent general elections failed to comply with AU principles, as well as broader international standards required for credible democratic polling. The preliminary findings were released in a statement on Wednesday.

According to the mission, a series of systemic issues — including limited political space, irregularities in the campaign environment, complaints about the transparency of vote counting, and restrictions faced by opposition parties — undermined the credibility of the electoral process both before and after polling day.

The AU delegation noted that the election fell short of key obligations that Tanzania has committed to under regional frameworks such as the African Charter on Democracy, Elections and Governance, which encourages member states to uphold free, fair, and participatory elections.

As part of its recommendations, the Observation Mission urged the government in Dodoma to prioritise comprehensive political and electoral reforms, stressing that credible improvements must be made to rebuild public confidence and prevent a repeat of current tensions in future election cycles.

The AU added that it remains ready to work with Tanzania to support dialogue, technical reforms, and capacity building aimed at strengthening democratic governance in the country.
