By: Alhaji A. Barrie – Freetown, Sierra Leone.
The Government of Sierra Leone has dropped treason charges against former President Dr. Ernest Bai Koroma, officials confirmed Tuesday, July 14. The charges were related to the November 2023 attacks on military installations in Freetown, which authorities labeled an attempted coup. Koroma, who served as president from 2007 to 2018.
In a statement released from Abuja, where he has been based since being permitted to travel abroad for medical treatment in 2024, Koroma said he had been formally notified by the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice that the criminal proceedings against him had been discontinued.
“Today, I received the announcement by the Honourable Attorney-General and Minister of Justice that the criminal proceedings instituted against me have been discontinued in accordance with the laws of the Republic of Sierra Leone,” Koroma said. He added: “My faith has remained anchored in His providence and in the enduring conviction that peace, justice and reconciliation must always triumph over adversity.”
Koroma thanked President Julius Maada Bio and the government for their role in bringing the matter to a close. He also expressed gratitude to ECOWAS, Commission President Dr. Omar Alieu Touray, and several former West African leaders for pushing dialogue and regional stability.
He reserved special appreciation for Nigeria. “I am especially indebted to His Excellency President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, President of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, for his exemplary leadership, personal commitment and steadfast support throughout this process,” Koroma stated. He also acknowledged the hospitality of the Nigerian government and people since his arrival in Abuja.
The move comes as political leaders prepare for key regional engagements. Analysts say the discontinuance could help ease tensions between the ruling SLPP and Koroma’s APC. However, civil society groups are urging the government to clarify how justice will be pursued for victims of the 2023 violence.
Koroma ended his statement by calling for national unity. “Our country has overcome far greater trials because we have always found the wisdom to place nation above self,” he said.
