Ghana: NPP Flagbearer Aspirants Set to Ballot for Positions Ahead of January 2026 Primary today

Flagbearer aspirants of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) will today, Friday, October 10, 2025, ballot for their positions on the ballot paper ahead of the party’s presidential primary scheduled for January 31, 2026.

The National Elections Committee will meet the five aspirants or their representatives at the party’s headquarters in Accra to conduct the exercise.

Deputy General Secretary of the NPP, Haruna Mohammed, said on Thursday, October 9, that the process will include all aspirants who have met the party’s requirements.

“All candidates who have met the guidelines issued on July 29 and complied with them will be balloting today. Nobody will be exempted from any of the party’s rules,” Mohammed stated.

He emphasized that the procedures are rooted in the NPP’s constitution and must be respected by all contestants.
“These guidelines are grounded in the constitution, and every member who wishes to lead the party into the 2028 elections must abide by them,” he added.

Meanwhile, the Communications Director of Kwabena Agyepong’s campaign team, Paul Abdul Rahman Issah Dowuona, reaffirmed that Mr. Agyepong remains committed to the race despite recent controversy over a GH₵4 million development fee.

“The issue regarding this GH₵4 million payment — he has made it clear that, in principle, he is against it. The party has made its position known, and they are saying that it must be paid,” Dowuona explained.

He added that Mr. Agyepong clarified his stance during vetting, stating that while he opposes the fee as a prerequisite for contesting, he remains willing to contribute to the party’s development through other means.

“At vetting, he made his position clear and even committed to contributing substantially to the party’s development when necessary. His issue has always been that it shouldn’t be a condition for contesting the flagbearership,” Dowuona said.

The five aspirants contesting for the NPP flagbearer slot are Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, Kennedy Agyapong, Dr. Bryan Acheampong, Dr. Yaw Osei Adutwum, and Kwabena Agyepong.

The outcome of today’s balloting will determine the order in which the candidates will appear on the ballot paper for the upcoming primary.
