Pope Leo XIV has called for an end to wars around the world, especially in Ukrane and wars in Israel, Iran and Palestine.

Delivering an address to a crowd from the St. Peter’s Square at the Vatican on Wednesday, June 18, 2025, the head of the catholic church says “We must not get used to war.”

He says “In the name of human dignity and international law, I repeat to those responsible what Pope Francis used to say: When is always a defeat.”

According to Pope Leo, “…Nothing is lost with peace. Everything can be lost with war.”

His appeal for peace comes as the ongoing conflict between Israel and Iran enters its sixth day. Israel and Iran have been launching air strikes in each other’s territory, killing civilians, scientists and military officials as well as causing severe damages to properties and human displacements.

Russia and Ukraine also continue to fight, with a recent Russian drone attack reportedly killing at least 15 people in a residential building and injuring several others.

Outside the Middle East and Europe, there’s ongoing war in Sudan between the Sudanese army and a paramilitary group.
