South African singer Tyla has etched her name in history, tying the long-standing Billboard World Albums chart record for an African female artist with her self-titled debut album, TYLA.
The album has now spent 50 weeks on the chart, matching the record set by Cape Verdean music legend Cesária Évora nearly four decades ago. Released to critical acclaim, TYLA showcases a groundbreaking blend of Amapiano, R&B, and Afrobeats, earning praise from critics and fans alike. Rolling Stone hailed Tyla as a powerful ambassador for Amapiano, while Pitchfork highlighted her “savvy” vocal versatility.
The album’s breakout single, “Water,” propelled Tyla to global stardom, peaking at No. 7 on the Billboard Hot 100 and earning multi-platinum certifications in several countries.
Cesária Évora’s self-titled album still holds the record at 66 weeks, set in 1995. However, with TYLA continuing its strong chart performance, fans and industry insiders eagerly anticipate whether Tyla will surpass the milestone and set a new benchmark for African female artists on the global stage.
