Police in Zambia have arrested several suspected militia members and other persons of interest during a security operation at a property in Lusaka’s Kabulonga area.

Secretary to the Cabinet Patrick Kangwa said the operation was jointly conducted by law enforcement agencies on August 13, 2026, following prolonged surveillance of some of the individuals.

According to Mr Kangwa, authorities had been monitoring the suspects for several years, with increased surveillance carried out in recent months.

He said some of those under investigation were allegedly linked to military plans involving foreign nationals and illegal military training camps, activities which authorities consider a serious threat to national security.

In a statement to ZNBC News, Mr Kangwa said security personnel recovered high-grade military weapons, ammunition and other materials allegedly intended for use in an armed insurrection.

He said the operation led to the seizure of restricted military equipment and the arrest of suspected militia members and other individuals found at the premises. However, some people reportedly escaped during the operation and remain at large.

Mr Kangwa further disclosed that occupants of the property opened fire on law enforcement officers, resulting in an exchange of gunfire.

Among those reportedly found at the scene were senior figures affiliated with political parties in Zambia.

Those arrested include George Chisanga, Bishop Trevor Mwamba, Simon Phiri, Richard Banda, Francis Mulenga and Patrick Mwansa. The suspects are currently being held at various police stations in Lusaka.

Mr Kangwa said the suspects have been formally charged and that their families and lawyers will be granted access to them in accordance with the law.

He also disclosed that NRPUP presidential candidate Brian Mundubile was present at the premises during the operation.

Authorities say investigations into the matter are continuing, with further updates expected as more information becomes available.
