Award-winning actress Brenda Ngxoli has been announced as part of the supporting cast for the upcoming South African romantic comedy A Scam Called Love, set to premiere nationwide on March 7, 2025.
Ngxoli’s casting comes after a challenging period in her personal life. She recently made headlines after sharing a heartfelt video about her struggles with homelessness and the emotional toll of staying silent for so long. The public rallied behind her, with digital creator Mandisi Tshingana raising over R100,000 in support. She also secured a new hosting role for the South African Traditional Leaders Awards (SATLA)—and now, she’s set to return to the big screen.
Directed and written by husband-and-wife duo Carla Fonseca Mokgata and Nthato Mokgata (Spoek Mathambo), A Scam Called Love is a fresh take on love, deception, and cultural identity. It stars Didintle “Didi” Khunou as Zola, an ambitious chef chasing her culinary dreams, and Tobi Bamtefa, a UK-based rising star, as Julian, a carefree line cook with a love for risk.
The film follows Zola and Julian as they enter a green-card marriage to solve their financial and immigration struggles—only to find that fooling their families is far trickier than deceiving the government.
The supporting cast includes South African screen favorites Thando Thabethe, Lwazi Mthembu, Fezile Mpela, Rendani Mufamadi, and Trevor Gumbi, promising a lively and engaging cinematic experience.
“We wanted to create a film that’s not just funny, but cleverly chaotic, deeply South African, and effortlessly stylish—one that celebrates love in all its messy, unpredictable glory,” said the filmmakers.
A Scam Called Love will premiere at Sterk-Kinekor and Nu Metro cinemas nationwide on Friday, March 7, 2025.
