US President, Donald Trump had to be rushed out of the White House Correspondents Dinner in Washington DC on Saturday night after a gunman started firing.

Authorities have identified the shooter as Cole Allen, a teacher from California.

President Trump later shared a photo of the shooter, calling him a likely “lone wolf whackjob.”

Allen, aged 31, who US authorities confirmed is a teacher, was arrested after allegedly entering the Washington Hilton hotel and charging toward the ballroom where President Trump and about 2,500 guests had gathered for the 2026 White House Correspondents Dinner.

Local media reports said gunfire broke out near the event’s main security screening area just after 8:30 p.m. — as salad was being served, forcing the Secret Service to rush President Trump out of the room as members of his cabinet took cover under tables before they too were evacuated.
