Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan departed for Russia on Tuesday morning for a state visit aimed at strengthening bilateral relations, promoting investment opportunities, and expanding trade between the two countries.

In a statement posted on Facebook, President Samia said she was traveling to Russia at the invitation of Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“Today, I departed the country for the Russian Federation on a state visit at the invitation of President Vladimir Putin,” she wrote.

The President noted the historic significance of the trip, describing it as only the second state visit to Russia by a Tanzanian president since independence.

“This is the second such visit by a President of the United Republic of Tanzania, following the historic visit by the Father of the Nation, Julius Nyerere, in October 1969,” she said.

President Samia said the visit comes at a critical time as Tanzania prepares to implement its long-term development blueprint, National Vision 2050, which emphasizes a greater role for private-sector participation in driving economic growth.

“This visit is particularly important as we prepare to begin the implementation of Tanzania’s National Vision 2050, which calls for greater participation from the private sector,” she said.

During the visit, President Samia is expected to hold high-level discussions with Russian leaders focused on enhancing cooperation in key sectors of the economy.

“We will hold discussions with our hosts aimed at strengthening cooperation in strategic sectors that directly impact the lives of our citizens,” she stated.

The Tanzanian leader also highlighted plans to engage with business leaders and investors in an effort to attract investment and increase export opportunities for Tanzanian products.

“In addition, we will participate in business and investment forums to promote the opportunities available in Tanzania, while also expanding market access for Tanzanian products in Russia,” President Samia said.

The visit is expected to further deepen diplomatic and economic ties between Tanzania and Russia while supporting Tanzania’s efforts to attract foreign investment and accelerate national development goals.
