The Government of Mozambique has announced that five Mozambican citizens have been killed in ongoing “xenophobic attacks” in South Africa.

In a statement released on Monday, June 1, 2026, the government said the five Mozambicans were killed over the weekend.

Some 800 Mozambicans were trapped in the xenophobic attacks that started in South Africa’s southern coastal city of Mossel Bay on Friday, according to the statement.

The statement noted that “Regrettably, seven Mozambican citizens have died, five of them as a direct consequence of the xenophobic attacks and the other two as a result of road accident, when they were travelling in a private vehicle on their way back to Mozambique.”

About 300 Mozambicans have been forced to return home on their own since the outbreak of the violence.

According to the statement, “The remaining just over 500 have since sheltered in a safe location in Western Cape Province, and as of today, 1 June, the process of their repatriation to Mozambique is already underway.”
