Orchestra Baobab Marks 50 Years with New Album Celebrating Afro-Cuban Legacy

On April 6th, 2025, legendary Senegalese band Orchestra Baobab released their long-awaited anniversary album, 50 ans (Fifty Years), a powerful tribute to five decades of musical innovation and cultural legacy.

Known for their groundbreaking fusion of Afro-Cuban rhythms and traditional Senegalese sounds, the band’s latest project is both a celebration of the past and a testament to their continued creative vitality.

The first single from the album, also titled “50 ANS”, debuted back on November 24th, 2023, offering a preview of the timeless yet evolving sound that has defined Orchestra Baobab since the 1970s.

Written by the band’s veteran drummer Taga Koité and performed by his son, Papino, alongside vocalist Alpha Dieng, the track captures a moving intergenerational collaboration.

This dynamic not only honors the band’s legacy but also reflects the broader tradition of musical heritage being passed down within African families and communities.

Described as an “Afro-Cuban classic,” the single underscores the rich historical ties between African and Latin American music, particularly the enduring cultural dialogue with Cuba. Orchestra Baobab’s sound has long stood at that intersection — a musical bridge that continues to resonate with listeners around the world.

With 50 ans, the band reaffirms its status as one of Africa’s most influential musical institutions, proving that their rhythm, message, and spirit remain as vibrant as ever.
