Former Vice President of Ghana, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia has expressed solidarity with Member of Parliament for Assin South, Hon. Rev. John Ntim Fordjour, after an attempted raid by National Investigations Bureau (NIB) officials at his residence.

Dr. Bawumia visited Rev. Fordjour, urging party faithful to remain calm and steadfast in the face of “unfortunate political persecution”.

Background of the Incident

The NIB’s attempted arrest stems from Rev. Fordjour’s allegations about two suspicious flights landing at Kotoka International Airport, which he suspects may be involved in drug trafficking. The incident has sparked tension between the government and the opposition New Patriotic Party (NPP), with NPP bigwigs storming Rev. Fordjour’s house to prevent his arrest.

Reaction from NPP Officials

Minority Leader Alexander Afenyo-Markin slammed the government over the attempted arrest, describing it as “unnecessary” and vowing resistance unless authorities act with respect. “They’ve left and gone back where they came from. We’ll cooperate if they approach us decently—we won’t be intimidated,” Afenyo-Markin said.

Call for Restraint

Dr. Bawumia has called on President John Dramani Mahama to rein in security operatives, emphasizing that state institutions must not be used to harass and intimidate opponents. “Ghanaians will not accept this descent into lawlessness and fear. Our democracy is hinged on due process and rule of law,” Dr. Bawumia stated.
