Ghana’s Baba Yara Stadium No Longer Fit To Host Football Matches – Says CAF As It Withdraws Approval
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has withdrew its approval for Ghana’s Baba Yara Stadium, saying the facility does not meet certain international standards and is no longer fit to host football.
CAF has therefore urged the Government of Ghana to upgrade the Stadium.
The continental football Governing body pointed out poor state of the playing surface which it described as uneven with poor drainage and inadequate grass cover.
Ghana recently hosted Angola at the Baba Yara Stadium, losing 1 – 0 in their 2025 African Cup Nations (afcon) qualifiers opener on September 5, 2024.
There were sharp criticisms from Ghanaians after the match about the poor state of the field, with some blaming Ghana’s defeat on the poor state of the pitch.
CAF in its post-match statement, also complained about the poor state of the Accra Sports Stadium and the Cape Coast Stadium.
As such, in the absence of a CAF approved category A Stadium in Ghana, the country has been given the option to pick an alternative or neutral ground for the match week 3 and 4 games of the Afcon 2025 qualifiers.
