The Government of Ghana has formally written to the African Union (AU) requesting that the South African xenophobic attacks targeted at Africans be placed on the agenda at the upcoming Mid-Year Coordination Meeting to be attended by Heads of State and Government.
Ghana’s Foreign Minister, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, in the letter, said the xenophobic attacks should be treated as a “matter of urgent continental interest.”
This year’s Coordination Meeting is scheduled to take place from 24th to 27th June in Egypt.
Ghana’s appeal comes in the wake of recent xenophobic attacks against African nationals in South Africa. One of the victims of such xenophobic attacks is a Ghanaian citizen named Emmanuel Akowuah Asamoah, who has since left South Africa and returned to Ghana.
