An 11-year-old boy has reportedly drove his family’s pick-up truck into a Buddhist procession, killing eight Thai monks and injuring other people.
According to local media reports, the boy stole his parents’ truck on Thursday, July 2, 2026 and drove into a procession of about 30 months who were on pilgrimage in Thailand’s northeastern Mukdahan. Reports said the group of monks and lay followers were walking along a roadside in Mukdahan, about 600km northeast of the capital Bangkok, when the tragedy happened.
The Associated Press reported that the monks and their followers had started the 260-km walk to Ubon Ratchathani province about 30 minutes before the deadly accident.
Reports citing police and health officials, say about 10 to 20 other people were injured.
Local rescue group, Ruam Jai Mukdahan, shared camera footage showing the monks walking in a single line on the side of a road before the truck crashes into them.

According to the police, the boy is now in custody and will be questioned.
