China has strongly condemned US Vice President JD Vance’s remarks on the country’s economic relationship with the US, labeling them “ignorant and impolite“.

Vance’s comments came during a Fox News interview where he defended President Donald Trump’s tariffs, saying, “We borrow money from Chinese peasants to buy the things those Chinese peasants manufacture. That is not a recipe for economic prosperity. It’s not a recipe for low prices, and it’s not a recipe for good jobs in the United States of America.”

Escalating Trade Tensions

Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Lin Jian responded forcefully, stating, “China’s position on China-US economic and trade relations has been made very clear. It is surprising and sad to hear such ignorant and impolite words from this vice president.” The comments have sparked outrage among Chinese social media users, with some calling for Vance to be banned from entering China.

Tariff Row Intensifies

The criticism comes amid escalating trade tensions between the US and China. Trump has threatened to impose an additional 50% tax on Chinese imports if China doesn’t scrap its 34% counter tariff by Tuesday. If implemented, US companies could face a total tariff rate of 104% on Chinese imports. China has vowed to “fight to the end”, labeling Trump’s moves “bullying”.

Economic Concerns

While Trump’s administration argues that tariffs will boost the US economy and protect jobs, economists warn of potential disruptions to international supply chains, higher consumer prices, and increased risk of recession globally. The Chinese Embassy in the US has even referenced a speech by former President Ronald Reagan on the dangers of tariffs, highlighting the growing strain in US-China relations.
