The brutal murder of six community patrollers in Soshanguve, north of Pretoria in South Africa, has sparked renewed calls for urgent government intervention in crime-ridden communities. The patrollers were stoned and set alight on Saturday at Marry Me informal settlement.
Two suspects appeared in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, and their case was postponed to April 1 for further investigations. A memorial service was held on Wednesday to remember the six victims.
For Augustine Mokela, a family spokesperson for the Sesoko family, the loss is devastating. Two siblings, Tshegofatso and Philemon, were among the murdered patrollers. Philemon succumbed to his injuries after being shot and set alight, while Tshegofatso remains in hospital.
“As we speak, Tshegofatso is still in hospital. We have not told him about his brother’s passing because we are scared he will not recover,” Mokela said. “We have lost a great deal as a family. Philemon leaves behind a wife and three children. They were both unemployed, and all their children are still in school.”
