Uyo, Nigeria – Ghana’s hopes of qualifying for the 2025 African Nations Championship (CHAN) were dashed on Saturday after a 3-1 defeat to Nigeria in Uyo. The Super Eagles’ first-half blitz proved too much for the Black Galaxies, who now face an uncertain future.
After a goalless draw in Accra, the Galaxies needed a win or a high-scoring draw to advance. However, defensive frailties were exposed early on as Nigeria stormed to a 3-0 lead within the first 25 minutes. Goals from Ismaila Sodiq, Nduka Junior, and Isaac Saviour stunned the Ghanaians and left them with a mountain to climb.
Stephen Amankona’s 73rd-minute strike offered a glimmer of hope, but it was too little, too late. The Black Galaxies, who finished runners-up in the 2023 CHAN, now exit the competition at the qualifying stage, leaving fans and pundits questioning the team’s direction.
Nigeria, meanwhile, march on to the tournament, which will be co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda. Their emphatic victory over Ghana sends a strong message to their rivals and confirms their status as one of the continent’s footballing powerhouses.
