Despite ongoing deadly xenophobic against African nationals in South Africa, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, Chairperson of the African Union (AU) Commission, has commended South Africa for its enduring role in advancing Africa’s peace, security, development, and integration agenda.
Mr. Youssouf showered praises on South Africa during a meeting with Ambassador Nonceba Losi, Permanent Representative of South Africa to Ethiopia and the African Union.
The high-level engagement provided an opportunity for both leaders to exchange views on recent continental developments, including migration and other shared challenges facing Africa, the AU Commission said in a news statement on Monday, June 8, 2026.
According to the statement, discussions during the meeting emphasized the importance of dialogue, constructive engagement, and responsible public discourse in promoting the continent’s collective priorities.
Chairperson Youssouf also welcomed South Africa’s commitment to supporting efforts to preserve and digitize the African Union’s archives, describing the initiative as vital to safeguarding the institution’s historical legacy and institutional memory for future generations.
Ambassador Losi, in turn, praised the Chairperson’s leadership of the AU Commission and his continued efforts to drive the Union’s priorities and strengthen cooperation across the continent.
