Efforts to strengthen Sierra Leone’s media sector have received a significant boost following the presentation of two proposed policy reforms aimed at improving public service broadcasting and protecting the sustainability of community media.
The policy documents were presented by BBC Media Action and the Media Reform Coordinating Group (MRCG) under the European Union-funded MEDIA Project, bringing together government representatives and key actors within the media industry.
One of the proposed reforms focuses on transforming the Sierra Leone Broadcasting Corporation (SLBC) into a more independent, professionally managed and financially sustainable public service broadcaster.
The second proposal seeks to establish a comprehensive national policy for community media, with the objective of strengthening community radio stations and ensuring that local communities have greater opportunities to participate in public discourse and tell their own stories.
The recommendations emerged from extensive consultations involving journalists, civil society organisations, Members of Parliament and other relevant stakeholders across the country.
The proposed reforms also build on recommendations contained in the Tripartite Committee Report, further reflecting ongoing efforts to improve the legal, institutional and professional environment within which Sierra Leone’s media operates.
Speaking on behalf of the government, Deputy Minister of Information and Civic Education, Hon. Bockarie Abdel-Aziz Bawoh, reaffirmed the government’s commitment to creating an enabling environment for a pluralistic, independent and professional media sector.
He underscored the important contribution of community radio stations to civic participation, particularly in providing platforms through which citizens can access information, engage in public discussions and hold institutions accountable.
Stakeholders at the presentation described the proposed reforms as an important step towards building a stronger and more sustainable media industry capable of serving the public interest.
The reforms are expected to contribute to greater editorial independence, improved institutional sustainability and increased opportunities for diverse groups and communities to participate in the national conversation.
For community media in particular, stakeholders believe that a dedicated national policy could provide greater recognition and protection for local broadcasters while enabling them to continue addressing issues of direct relevance to the communities they serve.
The initiatives come at a time when Sierra Leone continues to pursue broader democratic and governance reforms, with an increasingly important role for the media in promoting transparency, accountability, civic education and public participation.
