Ghana: Tight Race Looms in NPP Belgium Branch Elections as Delegates Prepare to Vote on July 25

The Belgium Branch of Ghana’s New Patriotic Party (NPP) is heading into one of its most competitive internal elections in recent years, with delegates set to cast their ballots on Friday, July 25, 2026 to elect new branch executives.

Campaign activities have intensified across the country since nominations closed on Friday, July 17, 2026, with aspirants crisscrossing chapters in Antwerp, Gent, and Leuven and engaging members through online platforms, town-hall style meetings, and strategic visitations.

While several executive positions are up for contest, the Chairmanship and Secretary races have dominated conversations among the diaspora community, with both incumbent officeholders facing strong challengers in contests observers describe as too close to call.

Chairmanship: Incumbent Faces Vice-Chair in Test of Continuity vs. Change

At the top of the ballot, incumbent Chairman Mr. Solomon Amankwah Agyin, popularly known as “King Solomon,” is seeking a second term to continue leading the branch. He is being challenged by his current Vice-Chair, Nana Akosua Nyamekye, setting up a direct contest between the two highest-ranking officers of the branch.

Sources within the branch say the race reflects a broader debate within the diaspora about experience versus renewal. Supporters of Mr. Agyin point to his leadership over the last term and his visibility in mobilizing members for party activities in Belgium and in support of home. Backers of Nana Nyamekye argue for fresh energy at the helm and a different approach to member engagement and fundraising.

With delegates drawn from three major chapters, the outcome is expected to hinge on turnout and last-minute persuasion in the final week of campaigning.

Secretary Race Emerges as the Main Battleground

If the Chairmanship is competitive, the *Secretary position* has become the flashpoint of the election.

Incumbent Secretary Mr. Seth D. Oduro, widely known as “Ranking Member,” is seeking a third term. He faces a formidable challenge from Mr. Andrews Kwame Perprem, the current Antwerp Chapter Secretary.

Interviews with delegates in the past week suggest a growing appetite for change in the role. Many cite the need for stronger communication, better record-keeping, and more active coordination between the branch and its chapters.

Mr. Perprem, popularly known as “Kwame,” is campaigning on a *“servant leadership” platform anchored on a 10-point agenda aimed at transforming the branch’s operations, improving member welfare, and strengthening the NPP’s diaspora presence ahead of future national elections.

His message appears to be resonating. Several delegates who spoke on condition of anonymity said they are drawn to his promise of accessibility, transparency, and grassroots mobilization. “People want a secretary who is present, who responds, and who can organize,” one delegate in Gent said.

Who is Andrews Kwame Perprem?

Mr. Perprem brings extensive organizational experience to the race. He served as Secretary of the National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) Belgium for over five years and has been Antwerp Chapter Secretary for more than two years.

His resume also includes serving as a former Secretary of the Dangbe Students Union at the University for Development Studies, and professional work as a lecturer, development consultant, and political analyst.

Beyond party structures, supporters highlight his community work. He is credited with spearheading the formation of United Belgium for Bawumia (UBB), a diaspora support group, and with leading community development initiatives in both Belgium and Ghana through his non-governmental organisation.

“His track record shows he can organize people and deliver,” a supporter in Antwerp noted. “That’s what we need now to grow the branch.”

Mr. Oduro, for his part, is relying on incumbency and experience. Having served two terms, his campaign emphasizes stability, institutional memory, and the relationships he has built with the national party and other diaspora branches.

What’s at Stake for the Diaspora

The Belgium Branch is one of the NPP’s most active chapters in Europe, and its leadership is seen as critical to the party’s diaspora engagement, fundraising, and mobilization efforts.

With Ghana’s political calendar expected to heat up in the coming years, the new executives will be tasked with expanding membership, coordinating with headquarters in Accra, and ensuring that Ghanaians in Belgium remain connected to the party’s agenda.

Party watchers say the tone of this election — competitive but largely issue-based — reflects growing maturity within the diaspora. Online engagements have driven much of the campaign, but candidates have also prioritized in-person visits to chapters to meet delegates directly.

“The branch is at a crossroads,” a senior member in Leuven said. “Do we consolidate what we have, or do we restructure to reach more people? That’s what delegates will decide on July 25.”

The Road to July 25

With nominations now closed, the focus has shifted fully to campaigning. Both camps have been active on WhatsApp groups, Facebook pages, and in community gatherings. No major incidents have been reported, and branch leadership has urged all members to maintain decorum ahead of voting.

Delegates from Antwerp, Gent, and Leuven will form the electoral college. The results are expected to be announced the same day.

For now, the big question is whether members will opt for continuity with the current leadership, or embrace *change* with new faces promising a different approach.

As one delegate put it: “This election is not about personalities. It’s about which team can better position NPP Belgium to deliver for the party and for the community.”

On July 25, Belgium’s NPP members will provide the answer.
