The first batch of West African migrants deported from the United States have arrived in Sierra Leone. Among the deportees who arrived in Freetown on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, are five Ghanaians.

In addition to the five Ghanaians, there two Guinean citizens, one Senegalese and one Nigerian, making in total nine deportees.

The nine West Africans were expelled from the US under President Donald Trump’s immigration crackdown.

Speaking to journalists at the airport when the deportees arrived, an official of Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health, Doris Bah, says all the deportees were “traumatised due to the months in chains during detention in the US”.

She said most of them wanted to return to their countries.

According to her, “Some of the deportees were arrested on the streets and their place of work, while another was arrested while playing football in the US.”
