A former Managing Director of the Ghana Water Company Limited (GWCL), Dr. Clifford Braimah, has announced that Ghana risks running out of portable water soon.
He says urgent actions were needed to stop the further pollution of water bodies in Ghana.
Dr. Braimah made this known in an interview with Accra-based Citi FM on the Breakfast Show on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
According to him, Ghana was experiencing rising levels of heavy metals in water bodies which he said pose a long-term threat to Ghana’s water security.
He says “It is true that we will soon risk running out of water. I keep on repeating that some of the heavy metals we find in our water do not necessarily come from galamsey. There are a lot of activities that are dangerous if we don’t improve.”
He added that “You go everywhere, and you see mechanics, electricians, etc. and they get everything out there and poorly dispose them off and when it rains, the heavy metals seep into our water system. So one critical thing is to clear our catchment areas.”
