The Secretary General of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), Veron Mosengo-Omba, has announced his retirement amid an ongoing dispute over the 2025 Afcon title.
He announced his retirement in a statement. CAF decision to strip Senegal of the 2025 Afcon title and award it to Morocco has generated a heated debate.
Mosengo-Omba says in his statement that “I have decided to step down from my position as Secretary General of CAF to devote myself to more personal projects.”
He added that “Now that I have been able to dispel the suspicions that some people have gone to great lengths to cast on me, I can retire with peace of mind and without constraint, leaving the CAF more prosperous than ever.”
Mosengo-Omba, aged 66-year-old, had been criticised for staying on as secretary general past the organisation’s mandatory retirement age of 63.
