Pope Leo XIV to Embark on First Apostolic Journey to Africa in April

The Vatican has released the itinerary for Pope Leo XIV’s first apostolic journey to Africa, marking a significant milestone in his papacy. The 11-day trip, scheduled for April 13–23, will take the pontiff to Algeria, Cameroon, Angola, and Equatorial Guinea—his first visit to the continent since becoming pope in May 2025.

According to the Vatican, the visit will include meetings with Catholic communities, political leaders, and civil society groups, with a focus on promoting peace, youth engagement, and the Church’s social mission across the region.

Pope Leo XIV will begin the journey in Algiers on April 13 before traveling to Cameroon on April 15.

During the Cameroon leg of the trip, he is expected to hold talks with national leaders and participate in a “Meeting for Peace” in Bamenda.

The pope will then head to Luanda, Angola, on April 18 as part of the tour, continuing his engagement with local church communities and national authorities.

The visit will conclude in Malabo, Equatorial Guinea, on April 21, where the pontiff is scheduled to meet political leaders and members of the diplomatic corps before wrapping up the trip on April 23.

The journey is expected to highlight the Catholic Church’s priorities in Africa while strengthening ties with communities and leaders across the continent.
