Ghana: Education Minister, Deputy Communications Minister Recovering After Early-Morning Road Accident in Upper West

Ghana’s Education Minister, Haruna Iddrisu and Deputy Minister for Communications and Digital Technology, Hon. Mohammed Adams Sukparu, are recovering and in stable condition after being involved in a road traffic accident in the early hours of Thursday, February 12, along the Bolgatanga–Tumu highway.

The incident occurred as the two ministers, accompanied by their respective convoys, were traveling to the Upper West Region to participate in the 40th anniversary celebrations of Tumu College of Education and Jahan College of Education—two key teacher training institutions in the region. The event was expected to bring together education stakeholders, alumni, traditional leaders, and government officials to reflect on four decades of teacher education and national development.

What Happened

According to officials familiar with the situation, the accident happened during the early morning hours while the convoy was en route to Tumu. Although details surrounding the cause of the crash are still emerging, authorities have confirmed that all occupants of the vehicles involved survived the incident and were promptly attended to.

Emergency responders arrived swiftly at the scene and ensured that the ministers and other members of the convoy were transported to nearby health facilities for medical assessment and treatment. Medical officials later confirmed that both Minister Iddrisu and Deputy Minister Sukparu are in stable condition and responding well to care.

“All persons involved in the incident are receiving the necessary medical attention, and their condition is stable,” a statement from officials indicated.

Journey Cut Short, Safety Comes First

The trip to the Upper West Region was part of the ministers’ official duties, highlighting government support for teacher education and regional development. The anniversary celebrations at Tumu College of Education and Jahan College of Education were expected to spotlight the institutions’ contributions to training educators who serve across Ghana, particularly in rural and underserved communities.

However, following the accident, official activities related to the trip were put on hold to allow the affected officials and their teams to focus on recovery and medical observation.

Appreciation for Swift Response

The Office of the Minister for Education expressed gratitude to emergency personnel, healthcare workers, and members of the public who assisted in the immediate aftermath of the crash. The statement praised the professionalism and speed of response, noting that these efforts played a key role in ensuring that all those involved were stabilized quickly.

“We are grateful for the prompt response of emergency services, the dedication of health professionals, and the concern shown by the public,” the statement said.

Support and goodwill messages have also poured in from colleagues in government, education stakeholders, and members of the public, many of whom wished the ministers a speedy and full recovery.

Road Safety Concerns Resurface

The accident has once again drawn attention to road safety concerns, particularly on major highways linking northern regions of the country. The Bolgatanga–Tumu road is a key route for both official travel and commercial activity, and incidents along the stretch have previously raised calls for improved road conditions, better lighting, and stricter enforcement of traffic regulations.

While no official comment has yet been made regarding the cause of Thursday’s crash, authorities are expected to assess the situation and provide updates if necessary.

As of the latest update, both Haruna Iddrisu and Mohammed Adams Sukparu remain under medical observation, with doctors expressing confidence in their recovery. Government officials say further information will be shared should there be any significant developments.

For now, attention remains focused on the health and well-being of the ministers and their teams, as the nation wishes them strength and a swift return to duty.
