Heavy gunfire and loud explosions were heard late Wednesday night around Niamey International Airport in Niger.
Residents of neighbourhoods near the airport said the shooting began shortly after midnight, with sustained gunfire and powerful detonations reported in the area.
Local sources confirmed that the airport vicinity was the epicentre of the violence, though details about the attackers remain unclear. Calm has since returned, according to witnesses.
“No official casualty figure has been released as of the time of filing this report,” a source told AFP.
The cause of the gunfire and whether there were any casualties were not immediately known. Residents also reported hearing sirens from fire trucks heading toward the airport in the early hours of Thursday.
Security agencies in Niger have yet to issue a detailed statement on the incident, while investigations are expected to clarify the circumstances surrounding the attack.
Niamey International Airport also serves as the headquarters of a joint military force comprising Niger, Burkina Faso and Mali, formed to combat extremist groups operating across the Sahel region.
Niger has faced persistent security challenges linked to extremist violence and has been under military rule since General Abdourahamane Tiani led a coup in 2023 that ousted the country’s elected civilian government.
