Rwanda is seeking £100 million from the United Kingdom (UK) for an asylum which was terminated by British Prime Minister, Sir Keir Starmer.
The Rwandan government says in a statement that it has already filed an international arbitration case.
The President Paul Kagame’s administration argued that the UK has breached the terms of the agreement to send asylum seekers to Rwanda.
The agreement in question was signed by the previous Conservative government of the UK.
Under the controversial agreement, the UK agreed to make payments to Rwanda to host asylum seekers who had arrived illegally in the UK.
In its statement, the Rwandan government says it had decided to pursue claims in arbitration after facing the UK’s “intransigence on these issues.”
According to the statement, the Rwandan government was making three claims in relation to the Migration and Economic Development Partnership. The Partnership was signed in 2022 when Boris Johnson was Prime Minister of Britain.
Rwanda accused the UK in the statement of breaching the agreement by setting out the financial terms of the deal publicly, saying the UK has failed to make payments totalling £ 100 million, and “refusing to make arrangements to resettle vulnerable refugees from Rwanda.”
