The campaign team of Baba Jamal, the High Commissioner of Ghana to Nigeria, has questioned the decision of Hajia Amina Adam, the widow of the late Ayawaso East Member of Parliament (MP), to contest the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC) parliamentary primary for the Ayawaso East Constituency.
Special Aide to Baba Jamal, Baba Alhaji Khalid, told Accra-based radio station, CitiFM in an interview that Islamic practice requires widows to observe a period of seclusion (Iddah) for at least four months.
According to him, any attempt by Hajia Amina Adam to leverage public sympathy ahead of the primary will not succeed.
He says “Unfortunately, in the Islamic Community, such sympathy does not carry any weight because Qu’ran 2:234 is so clear on what a married woman does after she loses her husband. If she decides to ignore that obligation on her just to come and contest, in a typical Muslim community, they will be waiting.”
Qu’ran 2:234 says “As for those of you who die and leave widows behind, let them observe a waiting period of four months and ten days. When they have reached the end of this period, then you are not accountable for what they decide for themselves in a reasonable manner. And Allah is All-Aware of what you do.”
Alhaji Khalid explained that “We had been preparing ourselves to beat the man himself. It is rather unfortunate that Allah was also doing his own preparation which is always the best. So, the woman is not a match at all.”
The Ayawaso East parliamentary seat became vacant following the death of the sitting Member of Parliament, Mahama Naser Toure, on January 4, 2026, after a short illness.
The Ghanaian Parliament subsequently declared the seat vacant, allowing for the Electoral Commission (EC) of Ghana to schedule a parliamentary by-election for Tuesday, March 3, 2026, in line with constitutional requirements.
