Traffic was severely disrupted on the Third Mainland Bridge on Tuesday afternoon after a high-capacity commercial bus went up in flames near the Adekunle axis, affecting motorists heading towards Iyana Oworo.
The incident occurred at about 1:00 p.m., according to the Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA). In updates shared on its official X (formerly Twitter) handle, the agency said the burning vehicle obstructed traffic on a key section of the bridge, one of the busiest transport corridors in the state.
LASTMA officials were immediately deployed to the scene to control traffic and minimise congestion, while firefighters from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service worked to extinguish the blaze.
Emergency response
Authorities confirmed that emergency teams were actively managing the situation to prevent the fire from spreading and to restore traffic flow as quickly as possible. As of the latest update, there were no confirmed reports of injuries or fatalities.
Cause under investigation
The cause of the fire had not been determined at the time of reporting. Officials said investigations would be carried out to establish what led to the incident once the area was secured and the vehicle removed.
Key transport route affected
The Third Mainland Bridge, which stretches approximately 11.8 kilometres, connects the Lagos mainland to the island and carries thousands of vehicles daily. Due to its heavy usage, even minor incidents often result in major traffic delays, particularly during peak hours.
Motorists were advised to exercise patience and, where possible, use alternative routes while recovery operations continued.
