Poll: Mahama Ends 2025 With 67% Approval as Majority of Ghanaians Say Country Is on Right Track

President John Mahama ended 2025 with a 67% job approval rating, as a new Global InfoAnalytics National Tracking Poll indicates growing economic optimism among Ghanaians heading into 2026, alongside sharp political polarization and strong demand for constitutional reform.

The December 2025 poll, conducted across 13,495 voters in all 16 regions and 83 constituencies, finds that 66% of citizens believe Ghana is moving in the right direction, a sentiment consistent with the previous quarter and evident in every region.

Optimism Nationwide, Polarisation Persists

Confidence is strongest in the Upper West (81%) and Savannah (79%) regions. Even in the Ashanti Region, a traditional opposition stronghold, 45% say the country is on the right path.

However, views are sharply divided along party lines. While 91% of NDC supporters believe Ghana is progressing, 61% of NPP supporters say the country is headed in the wrong direction. Floating voters, who make up nearly a fifth of the electorate, lean optimistic at 68%.

Mahama’s 67% approval rating remains unchanged from the previous quarter, reflecting stable public confidence in his leadership. Approval cuts across regions but remains partisan: 93% among NDC voters, 28% among NPP voters, and 69% among floating voters. Disapproval stands at 24%, up slightly by two points.

Economy Drives Government Popularity

Economic perceptions appear central to the administration’s support. The 2026 budget, presented by Finance Minister Dr. Cassiel Ato Baah Forson, received 66% approval, with only 18% dissatisfied.

Living standards are also viewed positively. 56% of voters say their quality of life improved over the past year, while 70% expect further improvement in 2026. Only 18% are pessimistic about the year ahead.

Governance, Corruption, and Galamsey

Public confidence in anti-corruption efforts is rising. 60% now believe the government is doing enough to fight corruption, up from 58% last quarter, while 56% say corruption levels are improving.

On illegal mining (galamsey)

47% of voters nationwide say the situation has not worsened under the current administration. In mining regions, 43% share this view, and 56% nationally believe the government’s response has been adequate.

Strong Backing for Constitutional Reform

The poll shows overwhelming support for major constitutional changes, including:

57% support extending the presidential term to five years
58% support barring MPs from serving as ministers
63% support direct election of MMDCEs
55% support lowering the presidential age requirement
58% support abolishing the death penalty
56% support limiting campaign periods to 120 days

Voters under 44— Gen Z and Millennials —now make up nearly 78% of Ghana’s electorate, fueling calls for generational change. 64% of voters want younger leaders elected.

Party affiliation trends show the NDC at 41%, NPP at 26%, and floating voters at 19%. The NPP’s support has declined for three consecutive periods, while the NDC maintains a strong lead among voters with secondary and tertiary education.

The poll portrays a country broadly confident in its direction and leadership but eager for deeper structural reform. With a youthful electorate increasingly dominant, Ghana’s political future appears set to revolve around economic expectations, institutional reform, and generational renewal
