Four people are receiving medical attention following a serious plane accident at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport (IMAI) in Owerri, Imo State, on Tuesday. The incident involved a Cessna 172 aircraft, which reportedly somersaulted on the runway during the emergency landing.
The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) confirmed that the aircraft, registered as 5N-ASR and operated by Skypower Express, had departed from Kaduna International Airport for Port Harcourt International Airport before the crew declared an in-flight emergency and diverted to Owerri.

No Fatalities Recorded
In a statement, NSIB Director of Public Affairs and Family Assistance, Mrs. Bimbo Oladeji, confirmed the crucial news that no lives were lost.
She said: “The Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has been notified and has commenced investigation into a serious incident involving a Cessna 172 aircraft with registration mark 5N-ASR, which somersaulted on the runway at Sam Mbakwe International Cargo Airport, Owerri.”
All four occupants were on board during the accident, and thankfully, no fatalities were recorded. Airport emergency services responded quickly, and critically, there was no post-crash fire. Other airport operations have continued uninterrupted.

Investigation Launched
NSIB Director-General, Captain Alex Badeh Jr., confirmed that the bureau has launched its investigation into the cause of the somersault and emergency landing, expressing relief that no lives were lost.
Efforts are currently underway to remove the damaged aircraft from the site for a detailed assessment of the wreckage as the probe continues.
