A 38-year-old Ghanaian farmer, David Donkor, has been sentenced to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour by the Bekwai Circuit Court after being convicted of defiling his 13-year-old stepdaughter.
The conviction followed investigations by the Bekwai Domestic Violence and Victim Support Unit (DOVVSU), which charged Donkor with one count of defilement under Section 101 of the Criminal and Other Offences Act, 1960 (Act 29).
According to prosecutors, the offence took place in December 2024 at Afoako, a community near Bekwai in the Ashanti Region. The court heard that Donkor had unlawful sexual intercourse with the victim, who was 13 years old at the time.
The case came to light after the girl’s 27-year-old mother reported the incident to Bekwai DOVVSU, prompting a police investigation. Medical examination results obtained during the investigation were later tendered as part of the prosecution’s evidence.
Prosecutors told the court that Donkor fled the community after being confronted over the allegation, leading police to launch a search for him. Acting on intelligence, officers later tracked him to Ntotroso in the Ahafo Region, where he was arrested on January 8, 2026, with the support of the Ntotroso Police.
He was subsequently transferred to Bekwai DOVVSU to assist with investigations. Court records indicated that Donkor admitted to the offence in his caution statement before he was formally charged and arraigned before the Bekwai Circuit Court.
After considering the evidence presented, the court found him guilty and sentenced him to 10 years’ imprisonment with hard labour.
