Ex-Nigerian President, Goodluck Jonathan, and hundreds of foreign election observers have been trapped in Guinea-Bissau after the military in the country seized power in a coup.

Mr. Jonathan was in Guinea-Bissau to observe the elections.

But following announcements by now deposed President Umaro Sissoco Embaló and his challenger Fernando Dias that they have each won the election, a group of Guinea-Bissau soldiers appeared on state television on Wednesday afternoon, November 26, 2025, announcing that they have taken “total control” of the country.

The soldiers who called themselves the “High Military Command for the Restoration of Order”, directed the immediate suspension of the electoral process “until further notice.”

The soldiers also directed that all of Guinea-Bissau’s land, air and sea borders be closed, imposing an overnight curfew.

Overthrown President Embaló is reported to have told France24 that “I have been deposed”, saying he was yesterday that he was “currently at the general staff headquarters.”
