NIGERIA: 69-Year-Old Woman Steals the Spotlight at University of Ibadan Matriculation

Mrs. Kate Bosede Akomolafe, a 69-year-old retired data processing officer, stole the spotlight at the University of Ibadan’s (UI) Distance Learning Centre (DLC) matriculation ceremony on Friday, joining over 5,000 new students for the 2024/2025 academic session.

The university’s Registrar, Mr. Ganiyu O. Saliu, administered the oath of admission during the event, which welcomed fresh students into 16 different programs under the DLC.

A Lifelong Dream Fulfilled

Photos of Mrs. Akomolafe, clad in her matriculation gown and cap, quickly went viral on social media, earning widespread praise for her inspiring pursuit of higher education later in life.

According to the university’s official Facebook page, she is a retired Data Processing Officer who previously worked with R.T. Briscoe Motor Company. Now, she works as a pig farmer and former flour distributor, but she has enrolled to study Social Work, a course she says will directly support her work managing her non-governmental organization.

To achieve her dream of earning a degree, Mrs. Akomolafe, who was born in 1956, had to first obtain her West African School Certificate in 1976. Nearly five decades later, she returned to the examination hall, sitting for the WASSCE and NECO exams in 2023 to secure the necessary credits. Her persistence highlights an unyielding commitment to education and self-improvement.
