Police in Lagos have arrested a recently released ex-convict, Segun Kolawole, for allegedly robbing a trader just five days after leaving the Kirikiri Correctional Centre.
According to a statement issued on Thursday by the Lagos State Police Command’s spokesperson, SP Adebisi Abimbola, Kolawole, 25, was apprehended by officers of the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) around 8:00 a.m. on Tuesday at Oshodi Market.
Officers reportedly became suspicious when they noticed Kolawole holding a large sum of money. Upon questioning, he was unable to explain how he obtained N80,000 in cash and an Infinix Note 40 Pro smartphone found on him.
Further investigation revealed that the suspect had allegedly stolen the items and N200,000 in total from a trader who was asleep near Peka, Opebi, at about 5:00 a.m. the same day. The victim was later identified and confirmed the theft.
Recovered from Kolawole were N80,000 in cash, an Infinix Note 40 Pro phone, as well as newly purchased clothes and shoes.
In a separate operation, the RRS also arrested two suspected pickpockets — 27-year-old Sodiq Isa and 21-year-old Adekanmbi Ganiu — for attempting to steal mobile phones from commuters at Ojota Bridge and Orile Roundabout last Friday evening.
SP Abimbola said all three suspects confessed to their crimes and will be charged to court after investigations are concluded.
