Sylent Nqo, the highly acclaimed Zimbabwean-Mozambican guitarist, singer, and songwriter, is making significant waves across the continent, utilizing his unique blend of rhythm and spirit to redefine modern Afro-Fusion. Known by his artistic moniker, “The Guitar Sangoma,” his performances are celebrated for their healing, almost spiritual energy.
Born to a Mozambican mother and raised in Harare, Sylent’s musical journey began early after his parents gifted him his first guitar and a marimba set. His influences range from traditional African rhythms to contemporary pop and electronic sounds.
“I draw on a wide range of influences,” Sylent says. “From traditional African rhythms to contemporary pop and electronic sounds. But at the heart of it all, I just want to make something honest, music that speaks to people from all walks of life.”
Global Milestones and Achievements
Sylent Nqo’s career is marked by several international and continental achievements:
- 2022 Debut Album: His debut album, Sylent Treatment, introduced listeners to his distinctive mix of Afro-fusion, alternative, and electric soul, blending celebration with introspection.
- World Champion Title (2016): He made history by becoming the first African ever to win “Senior Solo Instrumental Grand Champion of the World” at the World Championships of Performing Arts in Hollywood.
- Zimbabwe Music Awards: Three years later, he was named Best Alternative Musician at the Zimbabwe Music Awards.

Sylent’s sound remains deeply grounded in the African continent, showcased by his collaborations with some of the biggest names in African music, including:
- Davido and Mr Eazi from Nigeria.

Sylent’s live shows with his band, The Noise Makers, have earned him acclaim, having performed alongside legends like UB40, Dr. Oliver Mtukudzi, and Hugh Masekela. Reflecting on his conversation with the late Bra Hugh Masekela, Sylent recalls:
