Blue Sharks Make History with 3–0 Victory Over Eswatini

From the Atlantic’s edge to the world’s biggest stage — Cape Verde has officially qualified for the FIFA Men’s World Cup for the first time in its history. The Blue Sharks delivered a commanding 3–0 win over Eswatini, sealing their place among football’s global elite and igniting celebrations across the island chain.

At the Estádio Nacional de Cabo Verde, the stakes were monumental — and the players rose to the occasion. Dailon Livramento opened the scoring early in the second half, followed by a sharp finish from Willy Semedo. In stoppage time, veteran defender Stopira added the final flourish, sending fans into a frenzy and confirming Cape Verde’s place in the 2026 World Cup.

The result capped a remarkable qualifying campaign, with Cape Verde topping Group D ahead of continental powerhouse Cameroon, who were held to a draw by Angola. The Blue Sharks finished four points clear, securing one of Africa’s nine automatic spots in the expanded tournament set to take place in the United States, Canada, and Mexico.

With a population of just over 500,000, Cape Verde becomes one of the smallest nations ever to qualify for the World Cup. The achievement is a testament to years of investment in grassroots football, the strategic integration of diaspora talent, and the unwavering belief of a nation that refused to be overlooked.

“This is more than football — it’s a dream realized for every Cape Verdean,” said head coach Bubista, visibly emotional after the final whistle. “We’ve shown the world what heart, unity, and hard work can achieve.”

As news of the qualification spread, spontaneous celebrations erupted in Praia, Mindelo, Santa Maria, and beyond. Streets filled with music, flags, and fireworks as Cape Verdeans danced in joy, embracing a moment that transcends sport.

President José Maria Neves declared a national day of celebration, calling the victory “a triumph of identity, resilience, and pride.”

Cape Verde now turns its gaze to the global stage, where the Blue Sharks will face the world’s best. But for now, the islands rejoice. A new chapter has begun — one written in bold, blue strokes across the canvas of world football.
