Police in Michigan reported Sunday that several people were shot at a Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in Grand Blanc, about 50 miles north of Detroit. According to local authorities, the church building also caught fire, though the cause was not immediately clear.
Officials confirmed the suspected shooter is down and emphasized that there is no ongoing threat to the public. The church, which is surrounded by residential neighborhoods and other places of worship, serves a community of about 8,000 residents. Authorities are still working to confirm the number of casualties.
U.S. Attorney General Pamela Bindi said she was being briefed on what she described as a “horrific shooting and fire” and confirmed that FBI and ATF agents are responding. “Such violence at a place of worship is heartbreaking and chilling. Please join me in praying for the victims of this terrible tragedy,” she wrote on X.
The Michigan attack came just hours after another mass shooting in Southport, North Carolina, where three people were killed and five wounded. Police described that incident as a “highly premeditated” attack, in which Nigel Edge of Oak Island allegedly opened fire from a boat into a crowd gathered at the American Fish Company, a popular waterfront venue. He was later arrested.
The North Carolina shooting occurred around 9:30 p.m. Saturday in the town’s historic waterfront district. Authorities have not yet released the names of the victims or provided updates on the conditions of those injured.
