Oruche Ogeamara Precious, a prominent Nigerian youth advocate and feminist leader widely known as ‘Mama P’, has reportedly been detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (CID) of the Edo State Police Command headquarters in Benin City.
Her detention comes just hours after she was allegedly attacked by thugs at the Benin Airport in Edo State. Reports suggest these assailants are loyal to Julius Abure, the former head of an unrecognised Labour Party (LP) faction.
LP Chieftain Confirms Detention and Calls for Action
The development was confirmed by Dr. Yunusa Tanko, a Labour Party chieftain and spokesperson for the Obi-Datti campaign organisation, via his X handle. Tanko announced that the party is taking immediate legal steps to secure her release.
“Mama P is being detained at the State CID in Benin. I have just spoken to our legal director to deploy lawyers for her rescue. We want more people to come for her rescue — lawyers and all concerned should please mount immediate action. We need everyone’s support for her now,” Tanko wrote, urging urgent intervention from Nigerians.
Context of the Alleged Attack
Mama P is known as a strong supporter of the LP’s presidential candidate, Peter Obi, and is vocal in her criticism of political figures. According to reports from Parallel Facts, the thugs involved in the airport attack are alleged to have close ties to Julius Abure, who is now politically aligned with FCT Minister Nyesom Wike.
The detention of the activist has sparked significant outrage among Labour Party supporters and civil society groups. Many describe the action as a worrying attempt to silence dissenting voices both within the political party structure and across the broader Nigerian political landscape.
